LEAP and other Certified Independent Living Centers
Certified independent living centers can give a lot of help to families after someone has a spinal cord injury. The government helps pay for these centers through the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. These centers want to help people with disabilities live on their own as much as possible by offering services like information and referral, independent living skills training, peer counseling, individual and systems advocacy, and services that make moving from nursing homes and other centers to the community easier.
Linking Employment, Abilities, and Potential (LEAP) is a certified independent living center in Northeast Ohio for people with disabilities. LEAP can help you understand all the different ways to get money and help, from both public and private groups, so you can live on your own in your community. If you don’t live in Northeast Ohio, ask a local center for independent living for available resources to help you. Here is a list that shows all Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs) and Center for Independent Living (CILs) in each state.
